2011 Can Be a Great Year For Golfers Like Mike Ciociolo

Mike with Brother James

Every Special Olympics athlete is unique and each brings their own story and talents to the field when they train and compete. Golfer Mike Ciociolo is exceptional as his relationship and partnership with his brother, James provides him with drive and passion to be his best on the links. Mike and James have been Unified Partners and teammates in golf for over 10-years. The brothers are part of the Shrewsbury Parks and Recreation program and recently traveled together to the Special Olympics USA National Games in Lincoln, Nebraska. Although their division was very competitive, the Ciociolo brothers returned back to the Commonwealth with a bronze medal.

The National Games provided Mike with an exceptional sports experience on the field and off the field he had the chance to visit the Healthy Athletes venue where different health screenings were available for those attending the event. Mike received a number of different screenings when he visited the Healthy Athletes tent, one of which determined that he needed new batteries for his hearing aids and new tubes to improve his hearing. Mike also obtained new orthotics to help his feet and new shoe laces so he does not have to struggle to tie his shoes. Health screenings are part of Special Olympics goal to providing better lives for individuals with intellectual disabilities. With improved hearing and a better stance, Mike’s life on and off the golf course is much improved.
