Nothing says fall like football and on October 1st, the Taunton community will host the 4th Annual Special Olympics Massachusetts Flag Football and Cheerleading Event at Taunton High School. Residents look forward to the event each year as a way to welcome autumn and join together to implement a top-notch sporting event. Opening Ceremonies for the event will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by competitions and clinics which kick-off at 9 a.m. Taunton is proud to host an event which features athletes competing in Unified® Sports competitions which combine individuals with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team as equal teammates against other Unified® teams. The day celebrates better health for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Each year the event continues to grow and this year nearly 300 athletes and Unified® Partners are registered for the Unified 5X5 flag football games, football skills and the cheerleading clinic. Athletes will travel to Taunton from nine neighboring towns (Assonet, Attleboro, Bridgewater, Brockton, Dartmouth, Hanover, Mansfield, Milford, and North Attleboro). Members of the Taunton Youth Football team and their families will be assisting athletes as volunteers for the day while relatives and members of the Taunton community are encouraged to be ‘Fans in the Stands’.
Taunton is thrilled to participate in this event each year and looks forward to a day that features athleticism, friendship, competition and inclusion. All participating athletes and Unified® Partners who attend this tournament will receive a participation award and automatically qualify to attend the season-ending State Games at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, November 13th. SOMA is proud to partner with the New England Patriots who help provide this incredible opportunity to SOMA athletes.
