Senior Athletes Enjoy Weekend of Competition, Fitness and Fun

Special Olympics Massachusetts is proud to be a leader in providing healthy lifestyles for those with intellectual disabilities through year-round sports and healthcare-related programs. The organization is also pleased to be the only Special Olympics chapter nationwide to offer a tournament for mature athletes; the Senior Sports Classic. The 2011 event takes place October 14th – 15th at the Resort & Conference Center at Hyannis and Barnstable High School in Hyannis. Over 150 athletes aged 40 and older look forward to the annual event which provides a memorable weekend of extraordinary competitions, health screenings, Opening Ceremonies and a dinner dance on scenic Cape Cod. Talented athletes will travel from Cape Cod areas including: Brewster, Hyannis, Falmouth, Mashpee and Sandwich. Teams representing other areas of Massachusetts are: Dorchester, Marlboro, Pittsfield, Revere and Wrentham.

 

The 2011 Senior Sports Classic gives each participating athlete an opportunity to participate in race walking and one additional including: bocce, horseshoes, or golf skills. The weekend also offers Fun Fitness Screenings, part of the Healthy Athletes program, with medical professional volunteers examining athletes in a series of physical therapy type exercises and education on the importance of stretching, eating healthy and taking care of one’s body. The Resort will welcome athletes and coaches with deluxe accommodations and top-notch facilities for Opening Ceremonies and a Friday night dinner dance.

 

A schedule of events for the weekend is as follows:

Event Timeline:

October 14, 2011-Resort & Conference Center

5:30pm: Opening Ceremonies

6:30-9:30pm: Dinner and Dance

*Rain plan – Barnstable High School gymnasium

 

October 15, 2011-Barnstable High School

9:00am: Competition starts (race walking)

11:00am: Lunch (donated by The Parrot Head Club of Eastern MA)

11:30am: Competition continues (bocce, horseshoes and golf skills)

2:30pm: Competition concludes
