John Bassi will be one of seven heroes representing Massachusetts at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in South Korea in January of 2013. John is a Police Officer from Pittsfield, Ma. Please support John, five Massachusetts athletes, and one volunteer in their Special Olympics Journey. Here is John’s story:
Three years ago, John Bassi was asked to join the Law Enforcement Torch Run, a year-round fundraising and advocacy partnership between police and Special Olympics. This was a very quick and easy decision for John to make since John is the father of Jake Bassi, an up and coming Special Olympics Athlete. As the father of a child with autism, John jumped at the opportunity to be able to use his career as a police officer to help support an organization that already had a positive impact on his son’s life.
Over the last 3 years John has been instrumental in growing the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Torch Run by acting as the liaison for the Pittsfield Police department. During this time he has been able to recruit more than 70 fellow officers into the Torch Run Program which collectively has raised more than $100,000 this year alone to support the year round activities of Special Olympics Massachusetts (SOMA).
“SOMA has given my son opportunities in activities and helped him in promoting social skills that nobody could surpass. I can say from a first-hand point of view that SOMA has changed my son’s life and made him a better person.” John truly represents the Spirit of Special Olympics and we entrust him to be our “Guardian of the Flame”.
