President and CEO Robert Johnson’s speech at the 2012 Special Olympics Massachusetts Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Welcome One and ALL:

We welcome everyone to the 2012 Special Olympics Massachusetts Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony with enormous pride.  I always describe this evening as a “do not miss” if you really want to know what makes Special Olympics Massachusetts so great.

This evening we will be paying our deep respect and profound appreciation to three athletes, three coaches, three volunteers, three families, a member of our Law Enforcement Torch Run Council and a Law Firm; all of whom have shown their determination, dedication and loyalty to our athletes and our program.  We will also be paying special tribute to a Special Olympics Family who has stepped up in a very big way in support of our organization by helping us pay for the very building you are sitting in.

The compelling stories of all of this evening’s award recipients will humble you and inspire you. Their stories of compassion, bravery, victory and yes, generosity will help us all to better understand and appreciate why this organization continues to grow in every imaginable way.  These are athletes who have conquered great adversity to routinely accomplish things that people around them might have never thought possible.  They are stories of coaches who have helped athletes understand that nothing is impossible with hard work, good training and determination. They are stories of volunteers who have given of their time and talents to ensure that the many athletic events that are run each year are staged with a high degree of professionalism and safety.  These are the stories of families who have persevered and have learned to celebrate every achievement.  These are the stories of sponsors and supporters who know that our athletes are worthy of their time and efforts.  These are stories of people that constitute “The Special Olympics Family.”

I want to congratulate all of this evening’s inductees and welcome you all to the Special Olympics Massachusetts Hall of Fame.

Most sincerely,

Robert A. Johnson

President & CEO
