Color Me Rad – Saturday, July 27, 2013
This past Saturday was like no other in Special Olympics MA (SOMA) history. As benefiting charity of Color Me Rad Boston – a fun 5k road race where participates get blasted with variety of colors along a non-competitive course – SOMA athletes, volunteers and supporters walked away with permanent grins and blue teeth. Picture this: high energy, loud music, neon sunglasses and a
whole lot of white running attire at the beginning of the race. By the end of 3.1 miles – the scene looks a little more like this
“I can tell you that I am the furthest thing from a runner and when I heard 5k I was scared. Once we got there and saw what a fun atmosphere it was my nerves went away. I have to say that was the craziest, most fun event I have ever been part of and we will absolutely be in for next year!” – Doug Valeri (2013 Color Me Rad participant and long-time SOMA volunteer)
Organizers at Color Me Rad enlisted our help recruiting volunteers to assist pre-race and on race day. A donation of $100 was made for each volunteer we brought! General donations and participant discount codes rounded out this year’s total at $19,000! Not bad for a first time event!
But perhaps more important than the final number is the experience gained. Normally – volunteers show up at our events ready and willing to assist one of our athletes or maybe a team looking for their game times. This event encouraged and allowed for the reverse. Special Olympics athletes were given the opportunity to give back to the thousands of supporters who usually serve them.
“This was the perfect opportunity for our athletes to give back to an organization that has given so much to them. Because of Special Olympics, my athletes have confidence and crave the team camaraderie only sports can give. This was such a fun experience and one my guys are still talking about. Thank you to Color Me Rad for choosing to partner with Special Olympics MA!” (SOMA Volunteer Coach)
